I am a Documentary Photographer based in Southsea, UK. Much of my recent work is concerned with the elderly: Those years of experience etched on their faces, posture contorted through time and garb of a bygone era. All of this I find beautiful and intriguing.
Rather than sitting my subjects for formal portraits; I prefer a more spontaneous approach. I suppose this way of working sits between two genres: Environmental Portraiture and Street Photography. I like to capture ‘edge-of-candid expression’ as I believe at this moment a persons essence shines through. When I see a character who interests me, I make my first picture unannounced and then continue to photograph as we talk. This interaction is an integral part of the process. To have a story to go with a face gives it heart.
